Case Study: A New Chapter for Bill and Margaret
Tuesday 7th January 2025
Bill and Margaret had been married for over 50 years, but their golden years were far from easy. Bill, who was visually impaired and physically frail, had been receiving minimal care—just 30 minutes in the morning and evening to manage his medication and prepare breakfast. Margaret, living with dementia, received no care at all.
Their daughter, Lynne, juggled her own family responsibilities while trying to care for her parents. With no additional support, the situation quickly became overwhelming. Lynne often found herself racing between her home and her parents' house, ensuring they had food and handling daily chores. Despite her best efforts, there were times when there wasn't enough food in the house or when simple tasks like getting bread from the freezer were overlooked because Bill and Margaret's care agency wouldn't step outside the scope of their care plan.
Lynne was frustrated. The agency provided only the bare minimum—medication for Bill and a cup of tea—leaving her to pick up the pieces. It wasn't sustainable.
A Moment of Crisis
The day before Your Care (South West) LTD was due to start, Lynne called in a panic. Margaret had fallen, but Lynne was home with her young grandchild and couldn't get to her parents. She asked if Your Care could help, even though the official care wasn't scheduled to begin yet.
Your Care quickly found an available carer and sent them round to check on Margaret. When the carer arrived, they immediately noticed signs of injury and called for an ambulance. While waiting for paramedics, the carer stayed with Margaret, keeping her safe and comfortable, and reassuring both her and Bill.
The carer also kept Lynne updated every step of the way, providing her with peace of mind in an incredibly stressful situation.
A Fresh Start with Your Care
Despite the challenging start, Your Care began their planned visits the very next day. The initial care started small: one morning a week, focusing on Margaret's immediate needs.
The first visits were about building trust and making a difference in the small things that mattered. The team prepared breakfast with Margaret and helped her tidy up the house. They worked alongside her, not just for her, fostering a sense of involvement and purpose. Importantly, they also provided companionship for Margaret, giving Bill a chance to take a break and catch his breath.
The effect was immediate. For the first time in a long while, Lynne saw a glimpse of relief in her parents' lives.
Building Momentum
As the weeks passed, the care expanded. Your Care began visiting three times a week, staying for two hours each time. They introduced a routine that brought structure and peace to the household:
-Margaret started receiving help with personal care, including showers during every visit.
-Bill's morning routine was supported with medication management, breakfast preparation, and meaningful companionship.
-When groceries were delivered, the carers assisted Margaret in putting them away, ensuring the household was stocked and organised.
One of the biggest differences? The carers didn't wait to be told what to do. They used their initiative, identifying tasks that needed attention and taking care of them without prompting.
A Happy Outcome
Today, the transformation is remarkable. Bill and Margaret's home feels calmer and more organised. Bill no longer feels the constant pressure of caring for Margaret alone, and Margaret has the support she needs to maintain her dignity and comfort.
For Lynne, the change has been life-changing. Instead of managing her parents' daily needs, she can now spend quality time with them—sharing a cup of tea, reminiscing about family memories, and simply enjoying their company. She has peace of mind knowing that Your Care is there to handle the practicalities with compassion and efficiency.
A Message from Lynne
"I started care for my mum with Your Care as my dad was already receiving support from another company. I'm so pleased I chose Your Care! I feel so much more supported, and Mum really enjoys their company and having someone to talk to. I have complete confidence in the care they provide to both Mum and Dad—nothing is ever too much trouble. Thank you all for everything you do, and a very Happy Christmas to you all!"
