The First Day-Club Visit: What Families and Guests Can Expect
The first visit to a dementia day club can feel like a big step.
Your loved one may be nervous about going somewhere unfamiliar. You might be wondering whether they’ll settle, what they’ll do during the day and whether the team will understand their needs.
That uncertainty is completely normal. Here’s what you can expect from a day at Your Care Dementia Day Club.
Before the first visit
We’ll take time to learn about the person joining us, not just their diagnosis.
We’ll ask about things such as:
- Their interests, routines and favourite activities
- Their mobility and any support they may need
- Food preferences and dietary requirements
- How they communicate
- Anything that may help them feel comfortable
- What they enjoy talking about, from favourite music to previous jobs and family life
Families can also arrange a visit beforehand, meet the team and join us for an activity. This can make the first full day feel much more familiar.
Arriving at the club
Our day runs from 10.30am until 4.30pm at 111 High Street, Hanham, opposite Hanham Library.
When guests arrive, they’ll be welcomed by a familiar member of the team and given time to settle in at their own pace.
There’s no pressure to walk into a room and immediately start joining in. Some people are ready for a chat straight away. Others prefer to sit, watch and get a feel for what’s happening first.
Both are absolutely fine.
What happens during the day?
Every day is different because our activities are shaped around the people attending.
A typical day might include:
- Music and favourite songs
- Quizzes and conversation
- Arts and crafts
- Flower arranging
- Games and friendly competition
- Puzzles
- Gentle movement
- Reminiscence and sharing stories
- Time to relax or simply enjoy the company
Nobody is forced to take part. Watching, chatting or helping in a different way can be just as meaningful as joining the activity itself.
Our team knows how to adapt activities without making anyone feel singled out. The aim isn’t to keep everybody busy every minute. It’s to create a day that feels enjoyable, purposeful and comfortable.
What about lunch and drinks?
Drinks are offered regularly throughout the day, with support and reminders available where needed.
Guests can also enjoy an optional two-course hot lunch for £6. We’ll discuss dietary requirements, preferences and any support needed with eating or drinking before the first visit.
Lunch is often an important part of the day. Sitting around the table together can encourage conversation, connection and a proper appetite.
What personal support is available?
We understand that families may worry about how personal needs will be managed away from home.
Our dementia-trained team can provide discreet support with:
- Finding and using the toilet
- Continence needs
- Eating and drinking
- Moving around the club
- Understanding what’s happening next
- Reassurance if somebody feels unsure or overwhelmed
Any support is provided respectfully, with the person’s dignity and independence at the centre of it.
What if they ask to go home?
It’s common for somebody to feel unsure during their first visit or to ask when they’re going home.
This doesn’t automatically mean the day isn’t working.
Our team will offer reassurance, conversation or a change of activity. Sometimes a familiar song, a job to help with or sitting beside the right person is enough to help someone settle.
If we have any concerns, we’ll contact the family. You won’t be left wondering how things are going.
Collection time
The day finishes at 4.30pm.
When you collect your loved one, we’ll let you know how their day has gone, what they enjoyed and anything useful we noticed.
They may not remember every activity or conversation afterwards, but that doesn’t mean the day had no value. The feeling of being included, supported and connected can remain even when the details are difficult to recall.
